Why Fencing?
The sport of modern fencing has been described as a high speed moving chess game with weapons. Fencing was used to teach warriors combat tactics, strategies and for physical discipline as it combines mental strategies, hand eye coordination with rapid muscle reflex movement while attacking and defending against an opponent with a weapon.
Originally ASU Fencing Club was established to teach fencing to students as a recreational club. During the 2005-2006 fencing season ASU Fencing Club obtained corporate sponsorship and became a competitive collegiate program as well as a recreational. ASU Fencing Club's competitive team joined the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California, of NCAA teams and fencing clubs and immediately established a reputation as a new and powerful force in colligate fencing.
ASU Fencing Club's Veteran Fencing
ASU Fencing Club is also the home to several nationally-ranked veteran fencers. Our club has been heard multiple times in the past few years as fencers from the club took their place on the podiums at USFA's North American Cup Tournaments and National Championships.
*Update* ASU Fencing Club's Wheelchair Fencing
In Summer 2010, ASU Fencing Club became the home of a new team of wheelchair fencers, Grand Canyon State Fencing Foundation. As of Winter 2011, GCSFF has opened their own facility. GCSFF will still be participating during our own practices.
Seated fencing is a Paralympic sport played individually or in a team. Whether you are wheelchair bound or have a disability that prevents you from fencing in an able body program, we have a program that meets your needs. They offer all 3 weapon, Epee, Foil and Saber. One of the unique characteristics of our program is that there is a strong integration with the able body program that gives us the opportunity to have mixed bouting which is beneficial for both, able bodied and disabled athletes.
The program has been highly successful and participants of the program have not only fenced nationally but have won medals including gold.
Giving Back to the Community
ASU Fencing Club's Fencing Club has tried to take an active role in giving back to the community. In 2012, ASUFC raised $300 for the Samaritan Care Foundation during our Fashion Show. In 2011, ASUFC participated in the American Cancer Society: Relay for Life raising $355. In August 2010, the club raised $430.00 for the Muscular Distrophy Association. In 2007, the club donated $500.00 to Arizona's Children's Association Annual Christmas Toy Drive, and in 2008 the club donated $500.00 to the Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development for their Christmas drive to get clothing for displaced children and adolescents in their program.
